Betty Barr
Author of
Arizona In The '50s
Betty
Barr is an award-winning journalist who specializes in uncovering
hidden treasures - the people, places and things unique to southeastern
Arizona.
Her books, Hidden Treasures of Santa Cruz County , released September,
2006 and the sequel More Hidden Treasures of Santa Cruz County released
November, 2008, include numerous stories of homesteaders and early
settlers of that part of southeastern Arizona , accompanied by numerous
historic photos.
Her in-depth series, “The Legends of Jim Hathaway,” a rancher,
man-hunter and gunfighter born in the border town of Lochiel, was
published simultaneously in Nogales International and the Bulletin from
May through July 2005. Her chronicles of the history of the legendary
Empire Ranch south of Tucson were adapted as a promotional piece by the
Bureau of Land Management and the Empire Ranch Foundation and used as a
historical handout at the annual Empire Ranch Roundup and Western Art
Show in September 2004.
Barr’s work has appeared in numerous publications including Arizona
Highways, Arabian Horse Magazine, Range Magazine, Arizona Quarter Horse
News, and Discover Southern Arizona Magazine. She has been a regular
contributor to the Nogales International/Bulletin newspapers since
1997. She co-edited Arizona in the ‘50s by Capt. James H. Tevis, with
Dr. William J. Kelly.
Barr is a University of Arizona graduate and a member of the Society of
Southwestern Authors. She moved to horse property in Sonoita with her
husband John in 1997. There she has realized her lifelong dream to
travel the back roads of Santa Cruz County and interview old-timers and
descendants of the early settlers.
